Scope

IEC 62109-1:2010 specifies safety requirements for power converters (inverters, MPPT charge controllers, battery converters) used in PV power systems. Mandatory for all inverters seeking ALMM listing in India.

Key safety requirements

• Electrical safety — isolation, creepage, clearance, touch current
• Thermal management and temperature ratings
• Mechanical construction and environmental protection
• Anti-islanding protection (per IEC 62116)
• DC injection limits (≤1% of rated output)
• EMC compliance (radiated and conducted emissions)
• Markings, documentation, and labelling

Part 1 vs Part 2

Part 1 covers general requirements for all PV converters. Part 2 (IEC 62109-2) adds grid-connected inverter-specific requirements including grid parameters, disconnection, reconnection, and power quality.

India context

MNRE's ALMM inverter schedule requires IEC 62109-1 and IEC 62109-2 certification from a BIS-accredited or IECEE CB Scheme certified lab. All inverter types are in scope.
