Scope

IEC 61730-1:2023 defines safety requirements for the construction of PV modules for long-term outdoor operation. It is the safety companion to IEC 61215 (performance qualification) — together they form the minimum certification requirements for ALMM listing in India.

What IEC 61730-1 covers

• Electrical insulation and creepage/clearance distances
• Flammability and fire performance class (A, B, or C)
• Mechanical integrity under static and wind loads
• Protection against electric shock (Class I vs Class II)
• Marking and labelling requirements
• Junction box and connector ratings

Application classes

• Class A: Accessible installation — stringent insulation
• Class B: Restricted access — trained personnel only
• Class C: Controlled access — grid-scale with controlled zones

2023 revision changes

Updated safety requirements for bifacial modules, higher-voltage systems (up to 1,500 V DC), and updated fire class test alignment with IEC 61215-1:2021.
