Also known as: panel tilt, inclination angle, mounting angle, tilt
The angle of PV modules from the horizontal plane. Typically set to the site's latitude for maximum annual yield — deviations of ±5° cost less than 1% energy. Steeper tilts improve monsoon rain self-cleaning in dusty regions.
Tilt angle (inclination angle) is the angle between the plane of the solar panel and horizontal. It is one of the most impactful installation parameters for annual energy yield.
For fixed-tilt systems, optimal tilt ≈ geographic latitude:
Soiling: A tilt above 10° enables rain to wash dust off modules. In Rajasthan and Gujarat, 12–15° tilt is often chosen even for low-latitude sites to reduce cleaning frequency by 30–50%.
Structural loads: Higher tilt increases wind uplift forces. Structural engineering input is required for tilts above 20° in cyclone-prone coastal zones.
Trackers: Single-axis trackers improve yield 15–25% over fixed-tilt — standard for utility projects above 5 MW in India.
