Also known as: Maximum Power Point Tracker, MPP Tracker, MPP tracking
Maximum Power Point Tracking — a control algorithm in solar inverters that continuously finds the voltage-current operating point at which a PV array delivers maximum power under any given irradiance and temperature.
Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) is a real-time electronic control technique that ensures a PV array always operates at its maximum power point (MPP) — the specific combination of output voltage and current where the panel delivers the most watts.
Because irradiance and cell temperature change continuously throughout the day, the MPP shifts with them. Without MPPT, a fixed-load inverter would capture significantly less energy — up to 30% less in variable-sky conditions.
The most common algorithm is Perturb & Observe (P&O): the controller makes a small step-change to the operating voltage, measures whether output power increased or decreased, then continues stepping in whichever direction increases power. More sophisticated variants include Incremental Conductance and Fractional Open-Circuit Voltage.
India's frequent cloud transients (especially during monsoon) make MPPT efficiency particularly valuable. Multi-MPPT string inverters are standard on commercial rooftop systems to handle partial shading from equipment and parapets.
